Composition (BA), Composition (BM), Lyric Theatre - Creative Concentration (BMA)
Do you want to create new operas and musical theatre works?
The Lyric Theatre @ Illinois program values flexibility, wellness, and creativity. Aspiring creators of sung theatre—composers, lyricists, stage and music directors—work with performers and designers to hone their craft, and are encouraged to submit a portfolio as part of their audition. Our faculty, together with the composition department and the Illinois Modern Ensemble, help students to explore their work in studio class, as well as in concert and stage works. The world-class Krannert Center for the Performing Arts houses the Level 21 program of the Department of Theatre, which works closely with Lyric Theatre to produce student work with costume, set, sound, media, and lighting design and with excellent stage management.
LTI also emphasizes the development of new works in partnership with industry professionals. A very important part of student experience is the large number of workshops mounted each year. Since 2013, it has brought a wide range of influential creative teams to campus to work and teach, including: Richard Maltby, David Shire and John Weidman; Ellen Reid, Roxie Perkins, and James Darrah; Mohammed Fairouz and Mohammed Hanif; Cori Ellison, Beth Morrison; Gene Scheer and Bill van Horn; Jeremy Gill and Sky Macklay; Ilya Demutsky and Igor Kolnyukhov.
The Krannert Center for the Performing Arts hosts a dizzying array of artists from around the world each year. Some of the artists that have had residencies at the Center include: Bang on a Can festival (Julia Wolfe, David Lang), Paola Prestini, Daniel Catán, Augusta Read Thomas, Anne Bogart and the SITI Company, the Builder’s Association, Steven Stucky, Jake Heggie, and Susan Werner and Ann Hampton Callaway.
