Vocal Coaching & Accompanying (MM and DMA)
Do you want to lead from the piano?
Lyric Theatre @ Illinois is a comprehensive program embracing a broad continuum of opera and musical theatre. We mount three fully staged productions of musical theatre and opera each year, performed in our outstanding opera house at the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, the Tryon Festival Theatre, and several studio, scenes, and workshop programs. Members of the LTI music staff develop skills as vocal coaches, rehearsal pianists, music directors, prompters, supertitle operators, linguists, arrangers, chorus masters, conductors, and composers, as their interests and abilities dictate.
The student has additional performance opportunities in Studio classes where scenes and shorter works are presented to teach acting, movement, and role preparation. Students study a wide range of styles, from classical musical theatre to bel canto opera, from contemporary to Baroque. Students are mentored by the excellent voice and accompanying faculties in art song repertoire. Illinois boasts one of the best performing arts libraries in the world, superb academic resources, and the world-class Krannert Center for the Performing Arts.
The Master of Music and the Doctor of Music Arts in Vocal Coaching and Accompanying was founded by legendary accompanist John Wustman and has a long list of distinguished alumni, including: Susan Ash-Baker, Franklin Brasz, Brian Garman, Ward Holmquist, Luke Housner, David Moody, Mary Pinto, Craig Rutenberg, Kevin Stites, Valerie Trujillo, and Julie Gunn.
Master’s candidates in Accompanying are fully funded with a tuition and fee waiver and an assistantship appointment.
